Audi Reshuffles F1 Leadership as Wheatley Departs

Audi has made a notable change to the management structure of its Formula 1 programme, consolidating leadership under one roof. Mattia Binotto, who has been serving as Head of the Audi F1 Project, will now take on the additional role of Team Principal, giving him full oversight both off and on the race track.

The reshuffle follows the departure of Jonathan Wheatley, who has left the Audi Revolut F1 Team with immediate effect for personal reasons. Wheatley joined the project in April 2025 and played a key role alongside Binotto in establishing the team at its base in Hinwil, Switzerland. His tenure included a milestone moment — the team scored points on its Formula 1 debut in early March, a strong start for any new constructor.

Audi CEO Gernot Döllner acknowledged Wheatley’s contribution during what he described as a critical entry phase, while making clear the programme’s ambitions remain firmly intact. The stated goal is to build a team capable of challenging for world championships by 2030 — and with Binotto now holding consolidated authority over the project, Audi appears to be streamlining its structure to move with greater purpose toward that target.

For a team still in its infancy on the grid, steady and focused leadership will be essential. Whether this consolidation proves to be a strength or a complication remains to be seen, but Audi’s message is clear: the direction hasn’t changed, only the person steering it trackside.
